In US trading on November 4, the December NYMEX WTI contract fell US$7.97 to settle at US$88.12 a barrel, down 8.29%, while the January Brent contract dropped US$8.98 to US$94.62, down 8.67% — both the lowest settlements since August 31. The trigger was the midterm election: with Democrats sweeping both chambers, Vice President JD Vance publicly blamed the Republican loss on the war with Iran and President Trump said there was no immediate plan to strike Iran, leading investors to bet on a faster end to the conflict and driving a US$15-20 geopolitical premium out of the price within 48 hours. Losses continued in Asian hours on November 5, with WTI and Brent around US$87.20 and US$94.00 a barrel. Supply realities have not shifted in step: Iran's Supreme Leader said US hostility would not change with a change of party, Kpler data show only five commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on November 1 versus more than 130 a day before the war, and EIA data show US crude inventories fell for a fifth straight week with distillate stocks at 99.3 million barrels, the lowest since May 2003.

FGX Crude Oil (03097.HK) is a commodity futures ETF seeking to track crude oil futures prices by holding crude futures and related instruments, with NAV moving with futures prices and roll costs. When the futures curve is in backwardation, rolling generates positive returns; in contango, rolling incurs a cost.

Rebecca Babin, senior energy trader at CIBC, said the crude market is in a "shoot first, ask questions later" mode after the surprise election result roiled sentiment; many observers had expected a landslide Democratic win to push Trump toward tougher military action, but Vance's remarks and the absence of public support from key allies have undermined that view.
