HK Stock Connect Daily Report: ALIBABA-W's HKD 80 Billion Placing All-In on AI, Hang Seng Index Loses 26,000 Level - 20260824

On August 24, the three major Hong Kong indices came under pressure and declined throughout the day. The Hang Seng Index fell 1.89% to 25,517.33 points, losing the 26,000 level, and the Hang Seng TECH Index plunged 3.61%, with turnover at HKD 291.151 billion. ALIBABA-W placed HKD 80 billion in new shares, all to be invested in AI infrastructure, with its shares falling 8.54% and dragging the HSI down 167 points. AI hardware stocks including optical communications and memory plunged, with ZJ INNOLIGHT down 11.32%. HSI quarterly review beneficiaries surged against the tide, with DIAGENS-B up 37.45%. Coal stocks rose against the tide. Southbound capital recorded a net buy of HKD 11.567 billion on the day. SINOPEC CORP rose 5.9% after results, with first-half net profit up 19.3% year-on-year.

I. Market Overview

On August 24, the three major Hong Kong indices came under pressure and declined throughout the day. The Hang Seng Index fell 1.89% to 25,517.33 points, losing the 26,000 level; the Hang Seng TECH Index plunged 3.61%; and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 1.89%. Full-day turnover was HKD 291.151 billion, significantly higher than the previous trading day.

On the market, large tech and internet stocks came under collective pressure, with ALIBABA-W (09988.HK) announcing a proposed placing of HKD 80 billion in new shares, all to be invested in AI infrastructure, with its shares falling 8.54%. AI hardware stocks including optical communications and memory were the biggest drags, with ZJ INNOLIGHT (03308.HK) down 11.32% and CIG (06166.HK) down 6.79%. With the HSI quarterly review results released, related stocks surged against the tide, with DIAGENS-B (02526.HK) up 37.45% and FAMEGLOW (03774.HK) up 25.27%. Coal stocks rose against the tide, with YANCOAL AUS (03668.HK) up 4.23% and nearly 70% of the sector reporting gains. Robot concept and most pharma stocks came under broad pressure. SMIC (00981.HK) fell 7.93%.

Southbound capital recorded a net buy of HKD 11.6 billion on the day. Within that, Stock Connect (Shanghai) saw a net buy of HKD 8.893 billion and Stock Connect (Shenzhen) a net buy of HKD 2.674 billion.

IV. Industry and Corporate Updates

1. ALIBABA-W proposes placing of HKD 80 billion in new shares, all to be invested in AI infrastructure

On August 24, ALIBABA-W (09988.HK) announced it had completed pricing for a placing of HKD 80 billion in new shares, planning to place 710 million new shares at HKD 112.70 per share, a discount of approximately 8.37% to last Friday's closing price. This is ALIBABA-W's first new share placing since its Hong Kong listing in 2019, with the new shares representing approximately 3.57% of the enlarged total issued shares. Net proceeds from the placing amount to approximately HKD 79.7 billion, and will be 100% invested in full-stack AI capabilities to strengthen AI infrastructure construction. ALIBABA-W is a Stock Connect constituent.

2. SINOPEC CORP posts interim net profit of RMB 25.6 billion, up 19.3% year-on-year

On August 23, SINOPEC CORP (00386.HK) released its 2026 interim results, with first-half operating revenue of RMB 1,436.561 billion, up 2% year-on-year; net profit attributable to parent shareholders of RMB 25.627 billion, up 19.3% year-on-year; and basic earnings per share of RMB 0.212. The company declared an interim dividend of 10.5 cents per share. SINOPEC CORP is a Stock Connect constituent.

3. VOICECOMM plans to repurchase H shares for no more than HKD 100 million

On August 24, VOICECOMM (02495.HK) announced that its board resolved to exercise the H-share repurchase mandate granted at the annual general meeting on June 25 2026, intending to repurchase H shares from time to time on the open market with its own funds, for a total amount not exceeding HKD 100 million. The repurchased shares will be held as treasury shares. VOICECOMM is a Stock Connect constituent.

4. STAR SHINE HLDG added to Hang Seng Composite Index; expects swing to profit in first half

On August 21, Hang Seng Indexes Company announced the semi-annual index review results, with STAR SHINE HLDG (01440.HK) added to the Hang Seng Composite Index; the change will be implemented after market close on September 4 and take effect on September 7. STAR SHINE HLDG previously issued a positive profit alert, expecting net profit of no less than approximately RMB 24 million in the first half, swinging to profit year-on-year. Following inclusion in the Hang Seng Composite Index, STAR SHINE HLDG is expected to be potentially included in Stock Connect. STAR SHINE HLDG is a potential Stock Connect constituent.

5. RED AVENUE NEW MATERIALS, QDAMA and Kingzhiwei AI among multiple companies filing with HKEX

On August 21, Red Avenue New Materials Group (603650.SH), Qdama International Holdings, Zhuhai Kingzhiwei Artificial Intelligence and InnoCare Pharma (688382.SH) among others submitted listing applications to the HKEX Main Board. Among them, RED AVENUE NEW MATERIALS is a second filing, appointing Haitong International as sole sponsor; InnoCare Pharma is an A-share STAR Market listed company primarily engaged in innovative drug R&D. If these companies successfully list and meet the conditions, they are expected to enter the Stock Connect candidate pool.
