On the news front, citing data from China's General Administration of Customs, that China's gold imports exceeded 1,000 tonnes in the first eight months of 2026, surpassing the imported in the whole of 2025 and marking the highest level for the period since records began in 2017, World Gold Council data showed that global gold ETFs drew net inflows of about US$18 billion in August, the second-largest monthly inflow on record, lifting total holdings to a record 4,189 tonnes.
UBS said in a research note that central bank demand remains a key pillar for gold prices, with reserve managers using gold to diversify portfolios and hedge against inflation, geopolitical risks and uncertainty over the accessibility of reserve assets.
