III. AI Industry & Corporate Developments
1. ALIBABA-W's Q2 earnings released; AI infrastructure investment keeps intensifying
On the evening of August 20, ALIBABA-W (09988.HK) released its second-quarter earnings for this year, posting operating revenue of RMB 268.953 billion, up 9% year-on-year; operating profit of RMB 15.161 billion, down 57% year-on-year; and net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders of RMB 10.444 billion, down 75% year-on-year. Among this, capital expenditure including AI infrastructure investment rose to RMB 67.678 billion. Alibaba stated that at the current stage the certainty of returns on AI-compute-related Capex investment is very high. However, while AI infrastructure investment continues to intensify, Alibaba is clearly under pressure on the profit side.
2. UBTECH ROBOTICS and BASIC SEMI enter strategic cooperation
On August 19, at the 2026 World Robot Conference, UBTECH ROBOTICS and Shenzhen BASIC SEMI Co., Ltd. formally signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The two parties will carry out in-depth cooperation around directions such as humanoid-robot energy-efficiency optimization and the development of low-power, long-endurance products, accelerating the scaled application of silicon carbide (SiC) power devices in the embodied-intelligence robotics field.
3. Ministry of Transport holds thematic press conference, formally launching creation of the first batch of typical application-scenario projects
On August 20, the Ministry of Transport held a thematic press conference to introduce developments on the "AI + Transportation" typical application-scenario innovation initiative. The Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Transport stated that, at present, the Ministry of Transport has issued the first batch of 41 key typical-scenario construction guidelines across 10 major directions — including intelligent driving, smart highways, smart railways, smart civil aviation, smart postal services, and smart multimodal transport — and formally launched the creation of the first batch of typical application-scenario projects.
4. Waymo mass-produces self-developed autonomous-driving ASIC, using TSMC's 5nm process
On August 20, Waymo, under Google-C (GOOG.US), stated it has independently developed an ASIC chip for autonomous driving and put it into production of its latest-generation Robotaxi. The chip delivers over 1,000 TOPS of compute — meaning it can perform more than 1,000 trillion operations per second; Waymo said that by this metric its performance is comparable to NVIDIA's latest-generation autonomous-driving system. The chip is manufactured by TSMC (TSM.US) using a 5-nanometer process, and will be deployed alongside Waymo's self-developed sensors and other hardware to process vehicle sensor data and run environmental-perception models.
