I. Market Overview

On August 5, the three major Hong Kong indices climbed amid volatility. The Hang Seng Index rose 0.24% to close at 25,915.82, the Hang Seng TECH Index rose 0.97%, and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 0.34%. Full-day turnover amounted to HKD 278.043 billion, slightly higher than the prior trading day.

By sector, the CPO (co-packaged optics) concept was strong, with VGT (02476) up 16.18% and KB LAMINATES (01888) up 10.28%. Gold stocks rose broadly—CHINAGOLDINTL (02099) rose 13.11% and LINGBAO GOLD (03330) rose 10.56%, as the international gold price reclaimed the USD 4,100/oz level. The UHV (ultra-high voltage) concept strengthened, with HARBIN ELECTRIC (01133) up 7.55% and DONGFANG ELEC (01072) up 2.84%, with UHV capacity under construction during the 15th Five-Year Plan set to reach twice that of the 14th Five-Year Plan. On the other side, oil stocks weakened, dragged down by the sharp drop in crude prices—YANCHANG PETRO (00346) fell 17.24% and CNOOC (00883) fell 2.63%. Optical communication stocks pulled back, with ZHONGJI INNOLIGHT (03308) down 5.18% and CIG (06166) down 4.70%, unsettled by rumors of a U.S. import ban on optical modules, though the companies said no formal document has been issued.
