The KOSPI opened at 5,637.77, down 1.62%, slid to 5,666.92 intraday and then turned higher, standing at 5,760.67, up 0.52%, around 08:55 Beijing time; Samsung Electronics fell 3% and briefly broke below KRW220,000 to KRW218,500, while SK hynix dropped more than 1% to KRW1,399,000 in early trade before reversing to a 0.60% gain. The market attributed the weak open to the sharp sell-off in US semiconductors on October 30: Intel's fourth-quarter revenue fell well short of expectations on weaker PC demand and its shares plunged 28.58% in a single session, the largest one-day drop since July 1974, while Amazon's third-quarter operating cash flow deficit fuelled doubts over AI profitability, sending the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down 7.2% that day. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng TECH Index rose 0.98% to 3,791.52 in early trade on November 2.
The CSOP FTSE HK-Korea Tech+ Index ETF (03431.HK) closely tracks the FTSE HK-Korea Tech+ Index (net total return version). Designed under the ETF Connect framework of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the index covers Hong Kong-listed technology stocks eligible for Southbound trading and leading Korean technology stocks, selecting up to 20 technology-oriented securities each from the SEHK and the KRX by market capitalisation, weighted by freefloat-adjusted market capitalisation with weight caps of 65% for Hong Kong stocks and 35% for Korean stocks, individual stock caps of 10% and 15% respectively, and semi-annual reviews. The fund primarily adopts a physical representative sampling strategy.
Kiwoom Securities believes the KOSPI's steep slide last Friday was excessive in nature and has left room for bargain hunting, while cautioning that market volatility may widen as several major US events unfold this week, warranting advance preparation.
