On the news front, an administrative building belonging to Saudi Aramco in Dhahran was attacked on October 14, starting a limited fire; Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry said no one was injured. Houthi forces have struck airports and other facilities inside Saudi Arabia several times over the past week, while Iran has stepped up attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. International oil prices rose on the day, with Brent crude futures up 1.35% at US$107.35 a barrel and WTI crude futures up 1.32% at US$95.38.
Global X S&P Crude Oil Futures Enhanced ER ETF (03097.HK) closely tracks the S&P GSCI Crude Oil Enhanced Index (Excess Return). The fund is a futures-based ETF that adopts a full replication strategy, investing directly in WTI crude oil futures contracts of different maturities traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange; it enters into contracts each calendar month and expects to use no more than 20% of its net asset value as margin, while no less than 80% of net asset value is invested in cash and short-term investment-grade government bonds, with income after expenses distributed at the manager's discretion.
Dongwu Securities believes that with bulls and bears battling hard in the October crude oil market, prices are more likely to stay high and range-bound than to rise sharply in one direction; the transmission from inflation expectations to US Treasury yields remains manageable for now, and pressure on risk assets from offshore liquidity should ease in stages.
