On the news front, the A-share market's regular dividend mechanism has continued to improve. Securities Daily reported on October 12 that, calculated by record date, 3,723 A-share listed companies had declared total dividends of more than RMB2 trillion so far this year as of October 11, of which 565 had implemented interim dividends and 11 special dividends, making "multiple dividends a year" increasingly the norm; in a low interest rate environment, the "coupon" advantage of dividend assets is becoming more prominent.
Global X Hang Seng High Dividend Yield ETF (03110.HK) closely tracks the Hang Seng High Dividend Yield Index. Compiled by Hang Seng Indexes Company and launched on December 10, 2012, the index draws its universe from large- and mid-cap constituents of the Hang Seng Composite Index and from constituents of the Hang Seng REIT Index; eligible securities must have paid cash dividends for three consecutive financial years, and those in the top 25% by one-year historical volatility or down more than 50% over the past 12 months are excluded, with the top 50 by net dividend yield then selected. The index is weighted by net dividend yield, with a 10% cap on individual constituents.
Shenwan Hongyuan believes that the period in which non-technology sectors outperform will be extended, and so will the time frame for absolute returns from high-dividend assets; high dividends and technology are a "seesaw", and until clearer signs of market strength return, investors can still hold high-dividend names on a defensive basis, with banks and utilities in focus.
